    Venue Policies

Bag rules are not the same everywhere. Each venue sets its own security guidelines depending on its size, layout, and the nature of the events it hosts. If you’re heading to a concert, football game, comedy show, or festival, knowing what’s allowed can save time and hassle. Below is a breakdown of what to consider at the most common venue types across the country.

    Stadiums

Stadiums are built for large crowds. These are the places where NFL games, massive concerts, and college football events take place. Locations like MetLife Stadium, AT&T Stadium, and SoFi Stadium often follow a clear bag policy in line with NFL security standards. Typically, attendees can bring one clear bag no larger than twelve by six by twelve inches, plus a small clutch. Bags must be transparent with no tints, patterns, or fabric blocking the view. Larger purses, backpacks, and coolers are not allowed.

Stadiums rarely offer storage or locker services, so anything that doesn’t meet the guidelines must be left in your car. Make sure to check the specific stadium’s website before heading out, as policies may change based on the event.

    Arenas

Indoor arenas like Madison Square Garden, Wells Fargo Center, and Crypto.com Arena host everything from basketball games to sold-out music tours. These venues are usually strict about their bag policies due to indoor crowd density. Clear bags are often required, though some arenas allow small non-clear bags if they are within the size limit, usually around five by seven inches.

Be aware that some artists or tours may enforce additional rules, especially for televised or high-profile events. Metal detectors are standard at arena entrances, and all bags are inspected.

    Amphitheaters

Outdoor amphitheaters such as Red Rocks, Hollywood Bowl, and Shoreline Amphitheatre have a more casual layout, but that doesn’t mean lax security. Clear bag policies are becoming more common here too, especially for national tours. Depending on the venue, you might be able to bring a small non-clear bag or blanket bag, but size limits will still apply.

Since many amphitheaters are located in park-like settings, it’s important to check whether bags with food or beverages are allowed. Most do not permit outside drinks unless sealed water bottles are explicitly listed as okay.

    Concert Halls

Places like Carnegie Hall or the Ryman Auditorium are more traditional in design. These venues cater to seated performances such as orchestras, acoustic sets, and theater. While bag rules may not be as strict as in a stadium, security still screens attendees and restricts large or bulky bags. A small purse or clutch is usually acceptable, and backpacks are often turned away at the door.

These halls rarely deal with rowdy crowds, but rules are still enforced for consistency and guest safety.

    Music Clubs and Theaters

Smaller music clubs and mid-size theaters such as The Fillmore, 9:30 Club, or Terminal 5 may not follow a full clear bag policy but still limit what you can bring inside. Many do not allow bags at all beyond a small purse or wristlet. Some will offer bag check for a small fee, while others will require that you return anything oversized to your vehicle.

Clubs also tend to have tighter space between guests, so even if bags are permitted, carrying a large one will make it hard to move around or enjoy the show.

    College Campuses and Athletic Fields

Venues on college campuses vary widely. Some football stadiums, like those at the University of Alabama or Michigan, follow similar rules to NFL stadiums and enforce a clear bag policy. Others may have looser guidelines, especially for smaller venues like soccer fields or basketball arenas.

Always check both the venue’s and the athletic department’s websites for the most updated information before arriving.

    State and County Fairs

Fairgrounds and temporary event spaces often use general guidelines that shift depending on the event promoter. While some adopt clear bag rules, many focus more on limiting cooler size, glass containers, and alcohol. Open-air events may also have rules tied to weather forecasts or local ordinances.

Since fairgrounds attract families and can stretch over acres of space, some organizers allow strollers and diaper bags but will still inspect them thoroughly.

    Festival Grounds

Multi-day festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, or Bonnaroo have their own bag policies, often outlined in detail on their websites. Hydration packs are sometimes allowed but must be empty at entry. Clear backpacks or small drawstring bags are typical go-to choices for these kinds of events.

Because attendees are often traveling from out of town and carrying more personal items, organizers usually offer rental lockers or gear check stations.

What You Should Always Do Before You Go

No matter the type of venue, it’s smart to:

Look up the event’s specific bag rules on the venue website
Double-check size limits and material requirements
    Leave non-essential items at home
Bring a clear stadium-approved bag or a small clutch
Arrive early to allow time for inspection and security
